Paczki

Today is Pazcki day, which is basically a jelly donuts eaten by the Polish before Lent. I have made them before, but not for a few years. It’s a very time intensive and daunting process. This year, I made the dough the night before and then fried them up the morning of. It worked out well. I took a dozen to work and Ellie took a dozen to work. Her dozen didn’t last past noon. Mine, because we were short-staffed today, made it to about Continue reading →

Soups, Good and Bad

I’ve never been great at making soup. I either need to follow a recipe or just give up before I start. There’s something about the free-form idea of soup that I cannot wrap my mind around. I hear that I can put anything in a soup and make it good, and my mind goes blank. I can only think of the soups I’ve had before and try to replicate them. But since I’m not really knowing what I’m doing, some step gets missed here or Continue reading →

Fermentation

So apparently there is a new seasons of Chef’s Table out on Netflix. Ellie and I really love this show. It’s fascinating to see how chefs from all over the world approach food. Often, they have very similar approaches and that usually means finding a way to modernize their country’s traditional dishes and prove it can stand up against all other cuisines of the world. Simply fascinating. More often than not, the chef cooks organic food that is locally grown by working with local farmers. And Continue reading →

A Perfect Dinner

Tonight, my creativity came easily. Tonight, I made pasta. My favorite, go-to dish which can be made in a pinch is pasta and Italian sausage. It’s one of those dishes I can put together without really thinking about what I’m doing. The ingredients are readily available and ready ahead of time. In a perfect world, I’ll eat it once a week. So why does a prepped in advance dinner make me feel creative? Maybe creative isn’t the right word, maybe it’s just it makes me Continue reading →

Coding or Cooking?

I’ve been trying to decide which of the things I did today was more creative, coding or cooking. Neither of them was particularly intensive, both were creative in some way, and both had satisfying results. Trying to decide which one is better isn’t really the important takeaway, but I want to weigh each one anyway. Coding For work, I needed to start laying out a landing page. I was given a rough design of what it should look like and a handful of functionality requests. Continue reading →

Daydreaming

Sometimes I wonder if I really missed my calling in life. Most of my day is centered around emailing and de elopement and other tech related things but my mind wanders to what I’m cooking for dinner. Like a ton of my resting mind thinks about food. Yesterday a co-worker of mine mentioned she tried making pasties only to be thwarted by her husband not wanted the calories in the dough. I then decided to make those for dinner instead of whatever I would have Continue reading →

Sausage

Because I don’t think anyone who reads this is going to get any spoilers, I figured I’d tell you what I made last night to give away as presents for Christmas this year. If you haven’t guessed from the title yet, I made sausage. Italian sausage. Ellie had this great idea, to save money on gifts, instead of buying gifts for everyone, I’d make them a gift in the form of a meal. Last year I gave family homemade pasta and it went over pretty Continue reading →

Danny’s Wonut Recipe

This past week, there have been a lot of articles going around talking about the newest rage in food. Where last year it was a cronut, a croissant donut hybrid, this year it’s the wonut. A wonut is a waffle and donut hybrid. When you think about it, and see pictures of it, you start to wonder why you’re only hearing about it now. I’ll be honest, I thought the cronut phase was dumb (though I never tried one and maybe my mind would change Continue reading →

Paczki

You know it’s Lent, right? If not, it is. As a Catholic, I have very strict rules about things I can and cannot do during Lent, which I mostly ignore. I don’t “give up” (or fast as it’s called) anything other than meats on Fridays because that’s still a challenge for me. Maybe someday I’ll feel as though I’ve mastered it and then I can work on fasting in an additional way. You know I’m Polish, right? If not, I am. Half, for what it’s Continue reading →

Hot Yellow Pepper Casserole

I just made this awesome dish and I didn’t document it. I’m not even sure what kind of peppers I used, but damn is it good. Sometimes things like this happen. You’re in the kitchen and you don’t really have a recipe but you know the taste you’re trying to achieve. For this one, I wanted a Mexican tasting pepper dish with a little heat. That’s exactly what I got. I had a process in mind and I followed it pretty well, and since it Continue reading →
