Killing the swarm

Blog / Sunday, September 20th, 2009

There are things that you learn when you live without the aid of your parents. For example, rotting fruits attract the most obnoxious of fruit flies. Hand in hand with that, fruit flies are dumb. All it takes is a paper funnel leading into a vase with cider vinegar to trap them and kill them all. I set one on our kitchen table today and I think I have already doomed the majority of the swarm to their death. Point Danny.

This summer I willingly set me schedule to be work and/or class from eight until four each day. Three weeks in, I realize that it might not have been the best choice. I am fatigued. I look forward to the weekends when I can have an extra drink or two or get a little extra rest. Or both.

The university admissions department is starting a pilot program this semester. It is similar to the one at MIT. If I remember correctly, our University has selected six students from six different majors to blog about their particular area of expertise. I bring this up because I was selected as the blogger to represent the English majors. I will be writing about writing. When I have more information on where to read my posts, I will make sure to let you know.

I was finally able to get the cylinder heads off of the Kawasaki engine. Everything inside looks to be in working order. To my eyes that is. I still want to replace a few things while I have it apart as preventive maintenance and as an effort to raise compression in the second cylinder. I think I will try replace the valve shims. Again, I will let you know as I know more.

I added two stories to the fiction section. One of them, Coffee Voices, is a story I wrote this summer and kept forgetting to post. The other, The Death of Ones and Zeros, is a story that I have due for class tomorrow. Enjoy them both and feel free to leave me some comments.

One final thought. I spent some time recently working on some new features for the site. For a while now I have been wanting a way to update my fiction writing without actually saving over the original story. I more or less want a way to show my revisions that I make on stories. Well, the work I did last week had me take a major step towards that. I did some database work to be able to distinguish revisions from originals. Now all I need to do is change around the part of the website that you see.

  1. 1. Both Kip and I are a fan of your “old comics” calender. The ability to hover over a date and see the comic is a feature that some other comic sites sorely need.

    2. I’m glad you’re The English Major, instead of some cigarette-smoking, skinny-jean-wearing type that I see around HCW.

    3. Did you apply for the blogging position, or did they find you?

  2. 1. Thanks Carolyn/Kip. The only problem with it is that it doesn’t work the same across all browsers and not at all in IE.

    2. Me too.

    3. I applied. I would like to think that they found me, but that would be a lie.
