Buffering

Turns out buffers can come in handy. My current comic buffer runs out on Wednesday. Which is timed perfectly with the end of my exams and papers due for this time of the semester.

I have been so swamped lately that I have not had any time to draw more comics. I had one from the 18th but none since.

Today I finally got the chance to sit down and create one that has been an idea for a couple weeks now. As a matter of fact I just finished inking it. I am quite happy with it.

Lately, in the little free time that I have, I have been looking at different styles of art that I could use for my comics. My current style is based on a favorite cartoonist from when I first got into reading comics, Bill Waterson. The man, in my opinion is a master. His art style is so simple that it is clean and focused. It is so elegant that you can look at it and see the time spent perfecting each stroke. It is what I hope to achieve some day.

I will admit, my knowledge of ink and Speedball nibs is limited, having no formal training. This is something that I plan on changing if I get the opportunity. There are times when I look at it and see that my lines are not straight, or too much ink pooled in one spot, or this or that. This is what led me to look for a different style of art, despite my love of the current one.

I have decided that I do not want to create digital comics. The extent of computers in my comic is for compiling each panel into a single strip (and for hosting them here). So that idea is out.

I also am not a fan of anime style which I see popping up more and more. This style deeply saddens me. I think this is because it is moving too far from what I believe a comic strip to be. So this style is out.

I also stumbled across the crime noir style of comic books. I truly like this style, though I o not feel that it fits my story and I would need to develope new characters. I also don’t think I could write appropriately for the style, I don’t feel that creative.

That’s where I am at right now. I want to know your thoughts on what I am doing and maybe what I could do to improve. Drop me a line at webmaster@sassyhacksaws.com.

P.S. Hopefully I will get time to create the commenting portion of this site.
