A formal invitation

Peace Corps / Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I meant to write to you yesterday, but an extreme case of fatigue at 9:00 PM took me out of commission for the day. On the plus side, I slept for 9.5 hours, though I’m still tired.

Anyway, my intent for this post is as follows. I received this in the mail yesterday:

TEFL Ukraine
Teaching English as a Foreign Language September 17, 2010 - December 17, 2012

Yes, that is exactly what you think it is. I’ve been officially invited to serve as a Secondary Education Teacher of English to a Foreign Language.

Now I suppose it’s time to start getting my butt in gear and my things together before the 17th is upon me.

  1. Wow, congratulations! What were the criteria that they looked for when applying? I’m currently a writing major, embarking on my last year of school, I saw your post on Wisconsins blog, how did having an english background help? Was that the reason you were selected? Or was there outside skills that you could offer? Thanks for any advice

  2. Thanks Chris!
The requirements vary. I’d assume with you being a writing major, you’d be qualified for the TEFL program like I am. I wasn’t an outstanding student in college, so academics aren’t a huge issue. Other than clearing medical and criminal background checks, I think you just need to have a passion for what you’ll be doing. I assume you do, considering you’re majoring in Peace Studies at Purdue.
An unexpected, to me at least, requirement for teaching English is that you have 30 hours of ESL tutoring logged before you leave. If you are considering the Peace Corps, I suggest you start with the ESL tutoring as soon as possible; it’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about once you’re accepted.
