Owning a House – Day 2

If you decide to buy a house, you’ll certainly think you have everything under control. You’ll know exactly what you’re getting yourself into and you’ll be confident nothing could really be thrown your way which you won’t be able to handle. That’s what I thought. The buying process was out of the ordinary in how complicated it became. We dealt with sellers who agreed to a long list of changes and signed off on the amendment to the contact for said changes. Come final walk-through, Continue reading →

OMG I cannot believe this happened again…

Ellie and I close on our house on Friday, and it cannot come soon enough. Guess what we found in our apartment again last night. Mold. A big old pile of it. Take a look: Gross. We had the final walk-through today on the house. We were checking to make the seller did everything they said they were going to do to guarantee the sale of the home. Not everything was up to our standards or was even addressed based on the list they gave Continue reading →

Biking

So we are closing on the house next week and then moving in a week later. At that point, I’ll have a 6 mile bike ride to work or a 45 minute bus ride, with a transfer. I’m going to opt for the bike ride. I’ve biked year round before, when I worked for the UW Arboretum and it was a five mile bike ride to and from work. The distance doesn’t bother me, the roads do. Madison is all about keeping the lakes surrounding Continue reading →

Craigslist

Craigslist is a fascinating concept. It successfully digitized a part of the print newspaper industry. Some have argued that Craigslist is largely a part of newspaper’s decline, but at the end of the day what is important is that there is an online classifieds section for me to browse and post to for free when I need to offload some stuff. Fascinating. Ellie and I are currently trying to offload our apartment. Our lease is up at the end of July but for some reasons, Continue reading →

Resolution

This year, I want to hold on to things less. That is my resolution. I have a tendency to be a pack rat. I have emotional attachment to a lot of things. I told Ellie the other day, I cannot get rid of one of my costs ever because it is my Peace Corps coat and it just means a lot to have it. Of course I said this the same day she got rid of two of her own coats, so I probably sounded Continue reading →

How to Make Friends

I don’t know if I’ve talked about this on here before–I know I’ve talked about it with a handful of different people–but, how do you make friends? Like, I legitimately want to know.  As far as I can remember, I’ve made friends when I’m in places where other people are trying to make friends en-masse. Like the first day of kindergarten, middle school, high school. The first week of college. Peace Corps. I cannot think of any friends I’ve made outside of these places, none Continue reading →

Another Year Ends, Looking Forward Now

It’s been a year now since I last looked back. I think I’ve come a long way, both physically and mentally. Any year I can say that is a good year, if you ask me. In the first half of the year, I spent much of my time working with students to prepare them for their English competitions. It was also my last full semester as a teacher in Ukraine. I think it was also where I really got into my groove in teaching. Hell, Continue reading →

A Christmas Tree

This isn’t a real post because it won’t contain any of the work related stuff or the stuff about being home that I’ve intended to write about but that’s okay. You want to know why? Because I make the rules, that’s why. Today, I put up a Christmas tree.  It’s really the only Christmas tree I need in my life now, too. The way I look at it, and I was explaining this to my parents, I don’t need a huge tree or a thousand Continue reading →

My life in boxes

It’s official, I moved back to my parents house. Temporarily and there are no plans of moving into the basement. None yet. Why would there be? Peace Corps is just over a month away. I thought a majority of the battle would be packing all of my stuff up before hauling it home but now I know that it was only a very small portion of the battle. I had an apartment full of stuff and now I’ve merged that with a house that needs Continue reading →

MIA, maybe

I would like to let you know that I might be MIA in the next week or so. I move in tomorrow and it will take some time to set things back up. I also will not have internet in my place before Wednesday. It is going to be rough. If for some reason the comics are not up on time, I apologize. Please bear with me. I hope I get a positive reaction to the next few comics. Tomorrow’s is iffy and next week Continue reading →
