On Being a Twentysomething

Ooh boy. This is one of those posts I knew I’d get to at some point but never really imagined it being here. The weird thing is that I knew exactly when it should be written. Today. I needed it out today because as of today, I am no longer in my twenties. In years past, I’ve tried to sum up only the previous year and what it meant to me. But this occasion is so momentous and it’s more than a year. It’s a decade. It’s Continue reading →

Subletting

I think we have a desirable apartment. We showed it to six or seven people so far and already two people have handed in applications to sublet. A few more expressed interest in doing so. And who wouldn’t want it? It’s a steal at the price for a two bedroom apartment in such a great location. Not that I expect it to, but hopefully all pieces of the puzzle fall into place this week and then Ellie and I can start planning for the next Continue reading →

Subletters

I’ve been fielding a bunch of emails, texts, and calls from people who want to sublet our apartment. It seems like it’s going to be an easier deal than when we sublet the last one. But subletter are weird. I mean, they’re flaky but even before they have a chance to be flaky you can tell they’re weird. The first couple stopped by last night, drove from across town to see our place. Ellie had done a fantastic job tidying up and making it presentable. Continue reading →

Craigslist

Craigslist is a fascinating concept. It successfully digitized a part of the print newspaper industry. Some have argued that Craigslist is largely a part of newspaper’s decline, but at the end of the day what is important is that there is an online classifieds section for me to browse and post to for free when I need to offload some stuff. Fascinating. Ellie and I are currently trying to offload our apartment. Our lease is up at the end of July but for some reasons, Continue reading →

Gardening

I think I want to turn this blog into a gardening blog. I have so many cool things, in terms of gardening, I think it would be fun to share them. For example, how many people do you know who have one of these growing? If you’re not aware, that’s tobacco. It’s my cash crop growing on the patio of my apartment. So yeah, I’m going to blog about gardening.

AWOL No More

I’ve been on hiatus. I’m back now, hopefully more regularly than the past six months. I know I did some writing here and there, and there would be spurts where I’d post a bunch every couple of days, but that’s not what I want. I want to write daily. Those every couple of day posts were all written on the same day and their publishing was spaced out. So really, I wrote once or twice a month for the past six months. I’m terrible. How Continue reading →

March Updates

I’ve been too busy lately. A lot of time was taken up by my grandma’s last few weeks. We had an unusual amount of family visiting to say their goodbyes and that kind of thing really keeps you busy. It’s not something I recommend for any of you. Work has also been keeping me busy. In a surprise turn of events, I had my three-month review at work and found out that they didn’t want to fire me. In fact, they seem to really enjoy Continue reading →

Embarrassment

Today, I was embarrassed. I live alone in my apartment. My school found the apartment for me. The woman who owns it is either a friend of the vice-principal or a friend of a friend of the vice-principal. She is also living in Moscow while I’m living in her apartment. I don’t know the reason, though. In Ukraine, this is a great setup. A lot of PCVs have problems with landlords and landladies dropping by unannounced. Coming from a society where this is unheard of, Continue reading →
