Dungeon Master

I don’t think I’ve talked about this much, if at all, but I really aspire to be a Dungeon Master for a game of Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve read great things about successful people playing the game and I want to be one of those people. I want my friends to be those people. I also want a platform to work on my storytelling. As a DM, I think it would be the perfect platform for me.

Back in January, the day my college roommate got married so I’ll always remember the date, January 4th, I bought the Dungeon Master Kit to learn how to DM. It’s been nearly a year and I’ve yet to play, but it looks like it’s going be different come Friday. I finally convinced/ambushed some friends into rolling characters this past Sunday. Granted, I had rolled tabletop RPG characters before, but I forgot how difficult it can be when you don’t know what you’re doing and D&D 3.5 doesn’t make the process easier. It took us two hours to roll two characters. That’s not encouraging to people who seem on the fence about playing in the first place. But we got it done.

Today, I found something that would have made the process painless and over in about a half hour. It’s a program called PCGen and it’s open source and wonderful. If you’re looking to make your tabletop RPG character creation easier on yourself, I highly recommend this program.

Anyway, I’ll update on how the night goes. I, as a DM, made the call that alcohol will be allowed at the table because I thought it would be enough to entice the wary adventurers. Also, I’m hoping one of the players takes me up on my suggestion to live-tweet the game. She has Twitter but doesn’t tweet so I think this will be a great way to get her into tweeting. If I can get an okay on that ahead of time, I’ll link her account and give details on when we’re going to play.

I need to craft the dungeon now. Does anyone know of any great tools for doing this?
