Five Pet Peeves of Danny

Blog / Monday, September 16th, 2013

Continuing with the theme of “Danny isn’t perfect,” I would like to list off a few things that I cannot stand. A perfect person wouldn’t mind these things, nor anything for that matter. But again, I’m not perfect.

To start off, let’s define what a pet peeve is before I start listing mine. To be honest, I looked it up because I wasn’t completely positive that I was using it right. Turns out I am which moves me a step closer towards being perfect. Boom. Anyway…

pet peeve

noun

a particular and often continual annoyance; personal bugbear: This train service is one of my pet peeves.

That being said, here’s the first five pet peeves of mine that I can think of:

  1. Leaving the cabinet doors open
I had a roommate for a summer in college who used to leave the cabinet doors open in our kitchen. She claimed she never did it on purpose and didn’t even notice that she was doing it. I noticed. It drove me insane. How could she not notice? How hard is it to close the door? I do it instinctively. I talked to her recently about it and she said she doesn’t do it anymore and really she only did it that one summer we lived together. She must have done it just to drive me insane (along with the baking on 95 degree days but that’s a different story).
  2. Bad drivers
Bad drivers are a pet peeve of mine and the reason the girlfriend has suggested I might have a case of road rage from time to time (is it still road rage if I’m only yelling at people for their stupidity?). After one of my fits of anger, I tried explaining why it bothers me when there are bad drivers around me. You see, when I’m driving, I see it as my duty to get me, my passengers, and my cargo safely to their destination. I drive safely enough that it shouldn’t be a problem. As long as everyone else around me drives safely, it shouldn’t be a problem. They don’t and I get angry. If you know you need to turn left, don’t ride in the right lane until 100 feet before your turn. Leave a couple of car lengths between me and you. If I see you tailgating me, I’m really tempted to hit the brakes just for giggles (I don’t because I think about the damage that would be done to my car and the inconvenience it would be to have it fixed). Things like that are a pet peeve of mine.
  3. Dishonesty
Personally, I don’t see how difficult it is to tell the truth about nearly everything (there are some limited situations where a lie is okay and I don’t have a problem with those situations). If you don’t want to hang out with me, don’t tell me you will and then cancel at the last-minute. I didn’t make other plans, neither should you. If something happens that makes you seem like a bad person, just know that if I find out that you lied about it to make yourself look better, then you’re instantly a far worse person than you would have been. It’s really simple to tell the truth. You just need to be comfortable with who you are and the consequences of what you do.
  4. Self absorption
Not everything is about you. A conversation needs at least two people. I knew a girl once who would go to any length to turn a conversation into a conversation about herself. People have told me stories about the non sequiturs she would use to stop the conversation if she saw no other way to butt herself in. That’s far beyond annoying. You talking only about yourself and not caring to ask about me or my opinion makes me feel like I could be replaced by the wall and you’d still be just as happy. Hell, I’d be happier because I wouldn’t have to listen to your self-absorption.
  5. People who can’t change their car oil
It saddens me that there are people in this world who are completely capable of changing their own oil in their cars but prefer to pay someone four or five times the cost of doing it themselves. Seriously, it costs me about $10 and no more than an hour of my time to change my oil. Yes, I love the smell of motor oil, but I’d do it even if I didn’t. It’s easy. I know more about my car and I have the knowledge that I’m saving a buck. For those of you who don’t know how to change your own oil, I get it. I think you should try it though. The owner’s manual of your car usually has directions on how to do it and there’s a plethora of videos on YouTube that can walk you through it. You could probably even find one for your exact car. You’ll save a bunch of money too.

Those were the first five pet peeves of mine that came to my mind while writing. I’m sure I have a few hundred more that I could write about, but I think doing that all at once would violate pet peeve number 4. Plus, I need to save the time so I can take care of number 5 and get back out on the road to yell at number 2. I’d be number 3 if I told you I could think of a better way to work number 1 into this paragraph.

What are your pet peeves?

  1. I definitely also have a pet peeve for certain driving behaviors, especially when people don’t use their turn signals, or brake first and then put on their turn signal at the very last minute. I also get annoyed if things (food, bike helmets, keys, etc) aren’t put back in their proper places.
