Tech Tips – OS and Virus Update Reminder

Tech Tips / Friday, March 2nd, 2012

This is your friendly reminder from the Technology for Development Working Group to update your computer and to update your security software. Updating might take time away from your day, but it’s the best way to keep your computer safe from viruses and running smoothly.

On Windows machines, find “Windows Update” in the Start menu. When it’s opened, check for updates and install at least the recommended updates. You may need to restart your computer.

In the Apple menu, in the upper left corner, choose “Software update…” This will scan for updates to your software, it’s best to install all updates. You may be asked for your administrative password. When updating is complete, restart your computer for changes to take effect.

It depends on which anti-virus program you have if you want to update the software and the virus definitions. Many times there is a big, “Check for Updates” button on the home screen. If it isn’t in yours, check the menus for something similar. If you see an option to turn on automatic updates, I recommend you choose this to save you some hassle in the future.

Happy and safe computing!
