November – Day 15

Blog / Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Halfway through the month and today was a big day.

Today, I finally finished the four-book tome of The Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I started these books back in late July or early August and I’ve read them almost exclusively since. Granted, there’s been travel and work mixed in there but I still read as much as I could and it still took me this long to finish. According to my Kindle, the four books combined are longer than reading War and Peace twice (and probably about ten times as interesting, in my opinion). I think I’m going to take a break from the series and read a couple of other books before I begin book five.

Today, I also wasn’t exhausted all day. I wonder if my nap yesterday worked wonders. I also wonder if my body just performs better when I don’t take my doctor prescribed ibuprofen.

Today’s challenge for my 30 Day Challenge is to make a meal. I cook often because I’d run out of easy meal options fast if I didn’t. Today, I was planning on making a meal from scratch before I even found out that today was a cooking day. I found a recipe for Mexican carnitas and my mouth has watered for the past two weeks thinking about it.

The recipe calls for pork but since my supermarket near me hasn’t had pork for the past few days, I substituted chicken instead. I also added a bit of duck fat to make up for the lean chicken meat. It’s currently simmering on the stove and I’ll be eating in a half hour or so. I’m going to serve it up with some sautéed onions and sour cream on homemade tortillas (seeing as how I live in Ukraine, tortillas are hard to find so I make my own).

I wrote slightly under 3,000 words last night and I got back to a point where I know what the next few scenes will be. I’ve read some writing tips lately and one suggested that I should end each day knowing where my story will go the next. I made sure to do this last night. Hopefully tonight I make it through the three scenes (it will add significant wordage to my story) and I’ll have the next few scenes mapped out in my mind.

That’s all for today.
