Tech Tips – Firefox and Chrome Website Time Limits

Tech Tips / Friday, November 4th, 2011

This month I did something I thought I’d never do, even though I’ve talked about it for years. I deactivated my Facebook account. I went cold turkey because I found myself wasting too much time on the website when I could have been productive and working on projects. In the few days that I’ve had so far of freedom, I’ve been more productive but I find myself finding other websites to spend my time on. Wouldn’t it be great to limit yourself on how much time a day you can visit a website? You can.

There are browser extensions you can install for Firefox and Chrome web browsers which will limit your time spent on websites each day. For Firefox, I recommend Leechblock (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/leechblock/). Just install it and start setting personal limits in the configuration box.

For Chrome, I recommend you install StayFocused (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/laankejkbhbdhmipfmgcngdelahlfoji). It will keep track of the amount of time you spend on your limited websites each day and cut you off when you’re out of time for the day. It’s a great tool that I used to limit my Facebook usage before I went cold turkey.

At the moment I don’t know of any extensions for Safari, Opera, or Internet Explorer which will limit your time spent on websites, but if you do know of them you should send them my way. I’ll be happy to know about them.
