His boring ass life

Alright, I know I said I would write a little a few days ago but I never got around to it. It isn’t that I have been busy, I just have been doing other things.

I think I will start this one off with the first book review of the summer.

My Boring Ass Life by Kevin Smith

The title fits as Kevin Smith demonstrates in his online diary turned 470 page book. For the majority of the book the reader is given updates on the mundane and repetetive motions of his day. The include, but are not limited to: waking up, shitting, going to get fast food, ‘boning’ his wife, and watching a vast array of movies and television.

While the first three fourths of the book are structured so, spanning roughly a year and a half, Mr. Smith eventually gives the reader some delightful tales. Do not get me wrong, I rather enjoyed his stories about acting in a film, Catch and Release and directing a film Clerks II, because it gave me a feel for a line of work I am and most likely will continue to be unfamiliar with. But I truly feel the meat of the book was presented in his nine part story Me and My Shadow.

It is in the story of his Shadow that we hear of Mr. Smith’s relationship with a certain Jason Mewes. The story spans from their intitial meeting in which Mr. Smith did not get along very well with Jason, through the making of numerous movies during which Jason becomes addicted to a variety of drugs. The story focuses on the battle between Mr. Smith and Jason’s battle to ward off the demons which are his addictions. The story is a powerful one that had me near tears a few times throughout.

The book finishes up with a few sparse tales of random thoughts of Mr. Smith, apparently opting to avoid the boring ass recolection of his life.

While the majority of the book was nearing a dull read, it is more than made up for by Me and My Shadow which would make a great stand alone book. While I do not recommend the majority of this book to you, I do recommend it for the sole purpose ofShadow. So if you have a week or two to fill with some reading, pick My Boring Ass Life up.

And back on the home front, it appears to be monsoon season. The amount of rain that I saw in the past two days boggles my mind. Everywhere I look I see flooding. My only thought is that it could be worse, it could be snowing.

While at work this past week I managed to actually get some things accomplished. First and foremost, I did enough work to keep it from looking like I was doing absolutely nothing…which I nearly am most of the time. Secondly, I took an afternoon of time and sat and planned out the comic strip for the summer. I hope this helps it out a bit. Now I will have the general concept of each strip planned in advance and when it comes time to drawing and writing the strip, I can focus more on the delivery than what is going on. Hope I made that clear, and I hope that it turns out to be the case. And thirdly, on top of it all, I got a raise. A whopping dollar an hour. I am now making the same amount that I was two summers ago when I worked the floor.

I am now going onto my fourth week of summer, and I have to say it might be the best one that I have had in a long time. I am busy all the time, but it is with things that I want to do. I also seem to be getting a lot accomplished. Reading is off to a good start. Painting is making a lot of headway. Keeping up with the comics. And the server is on its way to working.

Speaking of the server, if anyone knows why my file-sharing is not working between Ubuntu (current release) and XP/Vista let me know. I had it working one day and then I shut down for the night and it didn’t work for me the next day. Stupid computers.

Well, that’s all I have for today. I will try and check in a little more often than I have been.
