A little Marvel and DC

I should be sleeping.

I did something today that I have been meaning to do for a long time. I went out and bought comic books. Comic books in the sense of a graphic novel (I have owned Calvin and Hobbes comic books and Foxtrot and the like). It feels weird. I made sure I picked up a few that I would enjoy, so I grabbed a Batman and an X-Men.

Just a word of advice, do not start a comic book in the middle of a series. Confusing as hell.

I feel, though, as I should have been buying these for years. I feel like if you went to my house, inside my closet you would find dozens of boxes housing thousands of comic books in mint condition. Sadly it is not the case.

My intent in buying these was not for the story, as I stated they are too confusing to pick up in the middle. No, instead I bought them to study the art. That was another factor in choosing the ones that I did, lord knows that there are numerous iterations of Batman and X-Men. The artwork in these two, is beautiful.

I want to write a comic book someday.

On another note, I purchased a new sketchbook yesterday. It is a 14″x11″ as opposed to the 11″x8.5″ one that I currently draw in. It is a weird feeling that I am going to have to get used to. The feeling that I have so much space to draw in. I am used to confining my work into the smaller page. I also need to figure out which of my pen nibs works best for the larger page and then get used to using that nib (currently I am using a Speedball Lettering nib because the pen line is tiny and makes it less clunky in my confined space). So be prepared for clunky lines in the near future (read, when I make the transition to the larger sketchbook).

On a side note, I wish there was a way to avoid comic strips that I do not like. Each day in the paper, I see strips that could use a hell of a lot of work, granted my work is no Monet, but if theirs is going to be printed they should try a little harder. I guess that is all I have to say (without being a hypocrite).
