I just finished Life of Pi. Wow. I have set a personal goal of one book a week. On a Kindle it’s really easy to keep pace because I can just force myself to read at least 15% a day. I start new books on Sunday to procrastinate.
I started Life of Pi and I wasn’t really into it. However, yesterday or the day before it started to really get good and I couldn’t put it down except when I had lessons. I plowed through the end of it today.
What really got me was the end. Until the ‘investigators’ started questioning the truth of his story, I didn’t. It hadn’t crossed my mind that it could have been fabricated. I almost feel like including the second version of the story cheated the reader. Why couldn’t I go on believing this amazing story? But then I think leaving it out would cheat the reader just as much. Movies like Inception and Shutter Island don’t give you a definitive ending and you get to decide how it ends. I like the option.
I’m no sure which I prefer to believe.
