This is the second time I’ve read this book. The first time I read it in the 7th grade and I hated it. I wrote it off as a book that my teacher like and because I didn’t like her, there was no way I would like the book. I gave it another shot when I found out my students were reading it for class. Still not a good book.
It is certainly a child’s book. It’s written with simple language and with clear images. Being that it’s written quite plainly, I feel there should have been more to the book.
The characters aren’t fully developed. Much of the book is spent catching the reader up to speed on the world that Jonas, the main character, lives in. I wanted to know the most about the character referred to as The Giver, but we’re only given small glimpses of him. To me, he seems like the most interesting character.
At the end, I was left wondering what truly happened. I had many unanswered questions about the logistics of the whole world. I wanted more but I didn’t want to hear about it from Lois Lowry.
