Tutoring

Tutoring was canceled today. It was my last session. In some ways I’m sad (not getting to spend time with wonderful people trying to learn English) and in some ways I’m happy (I get to end my day sooner). The Peace Corps required me to fulfill 30 hours of ESL tutoring before I’d be qualified to leave. For some this might have been an easy thing to do, but for me it was a challenge. … Continue reading

Staging

It’s official, I start my big move on the 17th of September. I wanted to post this last week, but I never received my email confirmation of my flight. I didn’t want to go back and eat my words. As it turns out, it’s a good thing I had to call and figure out my flight information because my name was wrong in the system. I would have tried boarding with my ID with a … Continue reading

This one’s for you

I consider myself a writer even though it seems I only write my inane thoughts here. But trust me, I have many more inane thoughts. I recently realized I don’t hate my commute between home and Madison as much as I thought I did. It used to be that it was an hour ride where I’d watch the same scenery fly past. However, this past summer, I’ve used the time to perfect my writing and … Continue reading

Fill me in on what I don’t know

Here’s some food for thought, I leave one month from today. Here’s what’s already been cooking; there’s a bunch of stuff I still have to do. Seriously. I don’t know what most of it is. Some people have been talking about a TEFL test but unless the directions are in my packet and I haven’t dug that far yet, I don’t know why I don’t know anything about it. Tomorrow I will start digging for … Continue reading

My life in boxes

It’s official, I moved back to my parents house. Temporarily and there are no plans of moving into the basement. None yet. Why would there be? Peace Corps is just over a month away. I thought a majority of the battle would be packing all of my stuff up before hauling it home but now I know that it was only a very small portion of the battle. I had an apartment full of stuff … Continue reading

A teacher

It feels like I’m cheating the system. Read over this blog post. Or read this excerpt from it: Summer is a funny time of year for a Peace Corps TEFL volunteer. Classes are over, and with the exception of camps (which we aren’t required to do), there really isn’t a lot of organized work for a volunteer to do. Of course, each volunteer’s situation varies, and some are given more explicit instructions from their schools, … Continue reading

I’ll never go it alone

I feel like I’m going to be a freshman in college again. The summer after senior year of high school everyone started to get on Facebook. I used it mostly to unsuccessfully track down my future roommate. Other people started groups for the incoming class, for dorms and for individual floors of those dorms. We’d use the group wall to talk about what we’re bringing, our majors, our fears, and whatever. We’d find people that … Continue reading

Things I have to keep in mind

I officially accepted my invitation today. I would have done it sooner, but I wanted to read over the required material before accepting. I couldn’t do that because it was delivered to my parents house, so my mom offered to bring it up today. After reading over the Welcome Book, I’ve come to realize a few things that I hadn’t expected to be the case. First off, I jokingly said that I’d ship my motorcycle … Continue reading

A formal invitation

I meant to write to you yesterday, but an extreme case of fatigue at 9:00 PM took me out of commission for the day. On the plus side, I slept for 9.5 hours, though I’m still tired. Anyway, my intent for this post is as follows. I received this in the mail yesterday: Yes, that is exactly what you think it is. I’ve been officially invited to serve as a Secondary Education Teacher of English to a … Continue reading
